Christian Horner believes that – since the Canada GP last year – Max Verstappen has changed

Christian Horner describes the performance of the Dutchman in the first races of 2019 as ‘remarkable’ and ‘exciting’.

Since the crash of the Limburger during the free practice sessions for the Monaco GP, Verstappen has remained virtually flawless. “He has done a remarkable job,” said Horner at Sky Sports . “During his campaign last year, he has moved up a gear from Canada. He is now almost at the top of his ability and he enjoys the position he is currently in.”

Horner continues: “In Bahrain he was unlucky that he was just not on the podium and in China he tried it with Vettel after the second pit stops. After that he drove a very mature race and became fourth. This phase is all about collecting points. The gap with the boys for us is not that big. At the moment he is still third, for the Ferrari drivers and there is still a long way to go.”

The British team boss believes in the principle: ‘the best is yet to come’. “The exciting thing about him is that he is going to develop and only get better from here. It’s great times for F1 to have someone like Max, the upcoming talent of Charles Leclerc and hopefully we’ll see Pierre Gasly in that list soon. It’s exciting to see how a new generation comes to the fore.”
