Aston Martin emerges as surprise option for Vettel
Lawrence Stroll’s £200m investment in Aston Martin could open the door for Sebastian Vettel to move to what is, at least today, Racing Point.
Last week thisismoney.co.uk reported that Racing Point voted to ‘to allot ordinary shares… in the company up to a maximum nominal amount of £200,000,000… to enable the directors to grant AML an option to subscribe for shares of the company in anticipation of the sponsorship agreement’.
That £200m could be what sees Vettel swap Ferrari for Aston Martin.
The German is currently without a contract for 2021 and is evaluating his options.
While it was initially thought those options were Renault, Mercedes or retirement, Aston Martin is now being billed as a possible destination for the four-time World Champion.
RTL F1 presenter Florian König as saying: “Of course I think it is possible that Vettel goes to an Aston Martin team that will have Mercedes engines.
“I think there will be intensive work behind the scenes to ensure that Sebastian will still be in Formula 1 in 2021.”
It is a sentiment echoed by former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher.
The German still thinks there is a possibility that Mercedes will sell its Formula 1 team to Racing Point owner Stroll and current Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff.
And then, he said: “There is the possibility that Toto Wolff, in combination with Lawrence Stroll, can offer him [Vettel] something.”
Mercedes, though, has denied several times that it is selling its Formula 1 team while Racing Point/Aston Martin has all but officially confirmed Lance Stroll and Sergio Perez for next season.
